How, how, how do you tell your little 2-and-a-half (today!) year-old boy that the 6 year-old next door (who is really only about 2 inches taller than him!) doesn't want to play with him? Ugh, my heart breaks when Xander cries out, "John!" with such sheer, unadulterated enthusiasm for this little twerp that won't even give my boy the courtesy of a hello! Xander is sweet and friendly and full of fun and well, this kid doesn't seem to care about being kind to little ones. But my boy just loves him and wants to, "play red cars with John" and doesn't want to go upstairs to take a bath, he "wants to take a bath with John!"
I know that this is just the tip of the iceberg with the pain I will feel on behalf of my children, but boy, it just cuts me to the quick. Rejection sucks and rejection lives next door to us in the form of an unfriendly older boy with parent(s?) who smoke in their garage and let him ride around in the street in motorized mini cars. Thankfully, Xander doesn't seem to be taking it personally at this point and seems to think I'm the one that won't let him play with the neighbor boy (he may have a point there, I'm not exactly a fan of this kid), but still, the disappointment is crushing me. I mean, who wouldn't want to play with my fun boy? That....neighbor boy, that's who.
